Database Consolidation
Database consolidation is commonly paired with virtualization in an overall server consolidation initiative. Database servers are not commonly virtualized due to their IO intensive nature.
In many organizations there are far more SQL and Oracle servers than are actually required, providing an excellent opportunity for server consolidation. For example, many development and test environments have an overabundance of underutilized SQL Servers.
Database consolidation requires very little validation and testing, yielding high returns on this type of consolidation. Database moves are also relatively transparent to the applications they serve.
CiRBA Oracle and SQL Server Analysis include over 100 different rules applied to thousands of settings to maximize the success of consolidation efforts. The resulting intelligence identifies where database settings, workloads and other non-technical constraints are complementary and represent the opportunity to merge onto fewer systems.
Sample Rules:
- Contention settings
- Tuning parameters
- Global settings
- Data dictionary
- Locking
- Ownership
- Roles and accounts
